A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Argent, on a fess Gules a square knot of the first. Attached below the shield a Red scroll inscribed "NO TASK TOO GREAT" in Silver letters.
The shield is in the colors of the Corps of Engineers. It is charged with a square knot, one of the most important of engineer devices.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 97th Engineer Battalion (Separate) on 28 January 1942. It was redesignated for the 97th Engineer Regiment on 5 June 1942. It was redesignated for the 97th Engineer General Service Battalion on 6 February 1948. The insignia was redesignated for the 97th Engineer Construction Battalion on 9 May 1952. It was redesignated for the 97th Engineer Battalion on 9 April 1956.
